Improve venous return and reduce oedema causing the venous leg ulcers to occur

Aim of Dressing

Wick away exudate from the wound bed and apply appropriate circumferential pressure to aid in the reduction of oedema in the leg

Arterial and Venous Duplex, Ankle Brachial Index (ABI) +/- Toe pressures (particularly if they are diabetic)

Venous Leg ulcer

Newly diagnosed venous leg ulcer. This care plan can be used till appropriate duplexes, ABIs or toe pressures can be arranged.

Step 1

Wash patient's legs thoroughly

Clean the patient's legs in the shower thoroughly. Assess if diluted betadine is required (25% betadine/75% betadine).

Prepare sterile field

Prepare your sterile products

Apply aquacel

Apply aquacel and and account for that the aquacel will shrink approx. 20%

Apply absorbent pad

Apply zetuvit

Apply Tubular-Form

Apply double layer tubular form. ** You MUST measure the calf and ankle and apply the tubular bandage in 3 pieces each that match the circumference of the limb it is being applied too. Each section should overlap by 2cm and the top piece should stop 2 fingers below the knee

High exudating wounds

Where the exudate isn't managed by the zetuvits originally put on you can removed the tubular banage and zetuvit and re-apply new zetuvits and tubular bandgaes.

Infected venous leg ulcer

Newly diagnosed INFECTED venous leg ulcer. This care plan can be used till appropriate duplexes, ABIs or toe pressures can be arranged.
