To minimise the risk of failure of primary closure in a necrotic toe, potentially necessitating further intervention or leading to sepsis.

Care Plans

Single toe amputation

A great toe amputation was performed for acute ischaemia related to microvascular disease. The wound edges were readily approximated. To reduce the risk of wet necrosis, the area was dried and managed with Betadine.

Setup sterile field

Prepare the sterile dressing pack and aseptically unpack sterile products onto the field.

Clean the wound

Cleanse the wound carefully to minimise disruption of the wound bed.

Paint with betadine

Paint the incision and peri-wound skin with undiluted Betadine.

To cover or not to cover

Ideally, leave the suture line exposed to reduce sweating and moisture build-up. If dressing is necessary, apply a low-profile option such as Mepilex Border.
