Treatment Goals

To stabilise the primary closure and facilitate the use of stump shrinkers (amputation socks) and moulding techniques to aid prosthetic stump preparation.

Aim of Dressing

To promote drying of the primary closure area to prevent scab deterioration and minimise the risk of dehiscence.

Frequency of Dressing Change

Everyday

The patient required a BKA following a large untreated wound that had begun to progress to sepsis.

Step 1

Prepare you sterile field

Prepare a sterile field and arrange all sterile products using aseptic technique.

Clean the suture line

Clean the suture line and ensure it is dried completely.

Step 3

Paint the suture line

Paint the suture line and extend 5 cm on either side with Betadine. Allow to dry fully; repeat application for a second coat if indicated.

Apply a material island dressing

Only apply a material island dressing, as film dressings are contraindicated due to risk of maceration.
