Protecting from trauma

When the lesion is not bleeding, an atraumatic primary dressing is indicated.

Step 1

Prepare Sterile Field

Prepare a sterile field and arrange all sterile products using aseptic technique.

Apply inadine

Prepare Inadine by folding into appropriate portions (half or quarter) to minimise wound bed adherence.

Apply Carbon dressing

Apply a charcoal dressing (Vliwaktiv) to provide odour control and additional cushioning compared with Actisorb.

Secure

Secure with Hypafix; alternatively, a tubular bandage may be used.

Darcoe shoe

Arrange orthotic review to obtain a properly fitted Darco shoe. Although not typically used for long-term management, they may assist in safe mobilisation.They are no means trending but they do make mobilising safe.

Protecting + maintaining haemostasis

If active bleeding is present, apply a primary dressing to support haemostasis.

Prepare your sterile field

Prepare a sterile field and arrange all sterile products using aseptic technique.

Apply calcium alginate

In the presence of active bleeding, apply and press a calcium alginate dressing directly to the wound to assist haemostasis. Do not attempt initial control with gauze followed by removal, as this may dislodge the clot.

Apply Carbon dressing

Select Vliwaktiv as the sole dressing, as Actisorb is likely to be overwhelmed by active bleeding.

Secure

Secure with Hypafix; alternatively, a tubular bandage may be used.
