Uses

  • Sulventum Activac Use: When using the Sulventum Activac, ensure a spare canister is provided to the patient for continuity of care.
  • Contingency Planning: Provide a simple dressing as an alternative in case the VAC dressing fails, ensuring the patient is prepared for any complications.

Positives

  • Canister Capacity: Holds up to 300ml of exudate.
  • Portability: Highly portable, making it convenient for patient use.
  • Home Use: Patients can change the canister at home if properly trained.

Limitations

  • Limited Use for High Exudate Wounds: Not suitable for highly exudating wounds, such as lymphedema leaks, as it may not effectively manage large amounts of fluid.

Precautions

  • Contraindication for Bleeding Wounds: Do not apply a VAC dressing to a bleeding wound, as the vacuum-assisted closure (VAC) therapy will draw blood into the machine and canister.
  • Visibility Considerations: The canister is not visible when the Activac is stored in the carry bag, making monitoring difficult.
  • Frequent Monitoring: Always check the canister and tubing multiple times per shift to ensure there is no blood present.
