Treatment Goals

To prevent or delay the development of wet gangrene.

Aim of Dressing

To promote drying of the skin and tissue, reduce malodour, and minimise progression of necrotic tissue to wet gangrene in the context of arterial stenosis.

Ischaemic leg

Step 1

Clean the leg

Gently cleanse the area with pH-neutral soap.

Paint the leg in betadine

Paint the affected leg with Betadine, ensuring thorough coverage of all compromised tissue. Reapply a second layer to areas demonstrating progressive necrosis as required.

Allow to dry

Permit Betadine to dry fully. Avoid application of socks or restrictive clothing if feasible.
